Litter & Waste
Knockraha
like every other village in Ireland has a responsibility to keep it's village tidy
and to protect our local environment for future generations. Our
strategy for this falls under two headings, Litter control for the day
to day management of litter and Waste minimisation which is concerned
with reducing the creation of waste and where waste occurs, reduce its
impact on the environment by reusing or recycling.
Litter Control
Knockraha
Community association has since 2007 actively scheduled (more
recently using the website events calendar and texting) weekly/
fortnightly litter blitzs which run from 7:00pm until 7:20pm on
Fridays. The Friday blitz's run from April
until October. The schedule for the months between October and
April changes to Saturday mornings from 10:00am to 10:30am.
Knockraha has entered the Cork County Council Litter Challenge not only to compete but to use the Cork County Council fortnightly reports as feedback on our efforts and to identify areas for improvement. To date we have had positive results which can be seen below.
We also encourage all members of the community to bin any road side rubbish in their area. There are also two bins in the village which are emptied on a regular basis by the council.

Waste Minimisation
Knockraha
Community
association has since 2009 put in place a program to actively
encourage the members of the community including businesses in the area
to review their waste management and to minimise waste generation.
To date we can confirm that all households within Knockraha village operate a dual waste collection system of waste bin and recycle bin.
The Primary school "Scoil Mhuire" embarked on a path to gaining Green Flag status. The school also operated a dual waste bin system.

Waste Minimisation Strategy
Our
waste minimisation strategy bases it foundations on educating the members of
the community, both young and old as well as local businesses on
waste minimisation and the environment. One of our key objectives is to educate the future generations of the
village at an early age to ensure that care for the environment becomes
second nature rather than a necessary evil. To this end the community association actively engage with the
Scoil Mhuire committee to assist the school in gaining and retaining
Green Flag status.
The community associations other objective is to provide the householders and businesses in the area of Knockraha with the necessary information and encouragement to help them reduce waste. comments from the Tidy Towns Committee.
